Each client is unique and has their own data infrastructure, so we create a migration plan individually for each project. A detailed plan is the key to a successful migration because data migration can have critical consequences if it is not carefully planned from the start.

The preparation stage of data migration focuses on understanding “what” is being migrated and “where”. For example, from on-premises to the cloud or from another CRM system to Dynamics 365 Online.

We analyze the client’s system by examining the documentation, interviewing the users, and investigating the structure of the source database.

We create technical requirements for the new target environment or analyze the already established target environment. In this step, we can deploy the D365 Module or Power Apps, perform needed customizations, develop business logic, and support user creation and licensing.

We prepare data mapping from the source system to the target system at the table (entity) and column (field) levels. Also, we implement data transformation logic in case the data needs to be changed in the migration process.

We perform test migration from a copy of the production or another environment that fully matches the production database structure.

After the test migration, we conduct testing from the side of the migration development team and the client side (acceptance test).

Before the production migration, we clean up the source system from the redundant historical data or exclude the data from the migration scope.

Depending on the source database size:

Single-phase migration: for databases up to 3 million records. It is conducted during off-hours (usually weekends) to limit business disruption.
Multiple-phase migration: for databases with more than 3 million records. It includes the master and delta migration phases.
